It is a tragedy and indescribable to put into words. On the 6th of May 2024 a building in George, located at 75 Victoria Street, collapsed and buried an estimated 81 people under the rubble. Video footage and photos from the accident scene show the sheer horror that this community has to undergo. Ten days later rescue and recovery efforts continue.

At the time of compilation of this report, 62 individuals have been rescued and recovered of which 12 are hospitalized. The total number of deceased individuals stands at 33 (27 males and 6 females) whilst 19 people are still unaccounted for. The sad reality continues and efforts to still find survivors is ongoing.

Our brothers from Round Table George 30 quickly stepped in and partnered with Food Socks to assemble food and essential hampers for the affected families. Their mission is to raise a total of R 400,000 for this impromptu project. Food Socks has committed to provide their food parcels at cost.

Johan Lochner from George 30 personally contacted Windhoek 34 a few hours ahead of our May Social Meeting. After conversations amongst our members and consulting with Area Chairman Basson, we made it our goal to help our brothers in RTSA and pledged and paid N$ 10,000 towards this initiative.

We do not boast with our assistance, but we wish to create even more awareness of the happenings in George to appeal to the Namibian public to assist where possible.
